Meetup Photos Deconstructed
Recently I organized a small photo meetup (with my friend Pavel), and as the reason was mainly to have fun and test/learn some new lighting techniques, I decided to put together this microsite with details about few of the shots.
We used all kinds of gear, but most photos included here were shot with Elinchrom Quadra system, with different types of modifiers (see below).
You can see more shots from the event here.
Shot 1 - Stairs | Diagram
Main light was Quadra head mounted into small salad bowl as reflector, shooting through 60cm white umbrella. Whole setup was hand-held and positioned quite close to her face (50cm or so), about 45 degrees top-right.
Second Quadra unit was up one floor, mounted with grid reflector, aimed down to the colored wall in background, making it lighter a bit. Both heads were using CTO gels, to match the warm tones of the background paint.
Shot 2 - Colored Wall | Diagram
This shot was using similar setup as the #1, only this time we didn't use the second pack, as the light from the main source was also hitting the wall, enough to not need the second fill.
Reflective panel was placed to bottom-left though, to bring up the details on shadow side a bit though.
Shot 3 - Teacher | Diagram
This picture ended up being lit completely different way than intended.
Main source was Quadra head in small lastolite softbox (60cm), with 1/2 CTO gel, positioned high above our model Veronika, slightly from right side.
Second light was another Quadra head, in gridded reflector, using 1/2 CTB gel, hitting the wall behind Veronika, adding cool blue effect to the background.
Shot 4 - In a Lobby | Diagram
Shot in a haste, with speedlights.
Wanted to give speedlights a go as well, so I used one SB-900 with shoot-through umbrella from top-right to light our second model Dana, using 1/4 CTO gel to make the tones bit warm.
To add different type of light source, our guy model Tonda was lit with second speedlight, but this time bounced off the California Sunbounce Micro, casting quite hard shadows on him.
Shot 5 - Dreamers | Diagram
Last shot of the day, back to basics.
Girl in front was lit by the Quadra with bowl+umbrella combination, with 1/2 CTO gel, hand held about 1 m from her face in top-left angle.
To give the background person some more shape, there was also second Quadra head, with grid and 1/2 CTB gel from back-right corner, aiming along the back wall.
